Jan did her first triathlon at the Scorching Events March 2015 event. It seems this is the beginning of an even greater challenge.
Smouldering Ember : – Congratulations on completing your first triathlon. What was it like as I have never done a triathlon? (I just pretend I do them.)
Jan Esquilant:- Thanks. It was great to have finally ticked it off and I must say I loved it, especially the loved the bike!
SE:- What decision brought you to do the Scorching Triathlon?
JE:- I’ve seen a number of friends do Scorching and the atmosphere and supportiveness made it seem like a fun experience. The same friends always seemed really positive about their experiences so I thought I really want to give that a go. (Clearly fair weather Scorchers! – SE)
SE :- Did you do much training for this first event?
JE:- Not as much as I should have! But yes I did increase my training. (Training is over rated. Just saying. – SE)
SE :- Which of the three components did you think was the easiest and why?
JE:- The bike – because it gave me a chance to catch my breath after the swim and I felt fairly confident on my bike.
SE :- And which of the three did you think was particularly horrible?
JE:- The swim. It’s my least confident discipline, I have been getting lessons which have helped heaps but I need more practice in the water to build up swim fitness.
SE :- Did you experience that sensation in the legs when you get off the bike and try to run, and the legs say no?
JE:- A little bit – I felt a little bit like I was Bambi, but I was also having issues with my Achilles so wasn’t expecting the run to be overly fast or easy anyway – and it wasn’t. (Clearly you are on the way to being a professional athlete as you can point out injuries and niggles already. – SE)
SE :- For the guidance of future first timers, what one tip / piece of advice would you tell them?
JE :- Practice what you’re weakest at, get guidance from someone who’s experienced at triathlons and remember the first time is really about having fun!
SE :- Do you do any other events apart from triathlons now?
JE:- ? I’ve done a few running events – both road and off road. (did Rotorua Marathon in 2011, have done some Xterra and of course Round the Bays).
SE:- I see from your Facebook page that you are intending to do the ½ Iron Maori in December. What are your training plans and what support do you have to help you get there?
JE:- ? Hahha, yes I can’t believe I’ve signed up for that! Eek. I’m planning on joining Wellington Triathlon Club as they have been great so far in giving me advice. I’ve also got a trainer who will be helping me get there, and I hope to join groups for cycling, swimming and running as necessary. (Indeed, training with others helps maintain the focus and direction. –SE)
SE:- What is your favourite curry and curry house in Wellington?
JE:- I’m not big on curries so don’t have one. (EH? I have notified Ripley’s Believe It or Not! –SE)
SE :- In 10 words or less, how would you describe Scorching Events?
JE :- Challenging, exhilarating and fun!
Thanks for this Jan and I wish you well, as does the rest of the Scorching community, on your target towards the ½ Iron Maori. Keep up the drive and enthusiasm and you will reach your goals.
