We are adding something new to the Scorching mix, a Scorcher Point Series!

(If you want to quickly skip to the numbers, click on any of the buttons below)

The Scorcher Point Series (SPS) will run from the start of the Duathlon series (in July) until the end of the triathlon series (in March the follow year).

How does it work though?

Simply, Scorcher Points will be awarded in two parts

  • Participation points: for every event you do you will get a set amount of points (no matter what distance you do).
  • Competition points: Are based upon what distance you do and how you fair against others. (ie if you do Short Duathlon you can get up to a maximum of 50 points, or if you do the Long Duathlon you can get up to 100 points (during the winter Duathlon season) – the actual points you receive are based on how your finish time compares to the finish time of the first person across the line at your distance, ie if you are doing the Short Duathlon and finish 10% behind the first person’s time you will get 90% of the maximum points for the Short Duathlon – ie 90% of 50pts = 45pts, if you are )

Okay, it is a little complex, (but that is Angel when it comes to numbers….) This structure though rewards participation, consistency and caters for the fact we there are multiple distances each event.

Points series breakdown

Participation Points

Are awarded to all persons who start a given event.

Individual 20 pts per event
Team Member 10 pts per event for each team member

Competition Points
(are only awarded to individuals)

Competition points are awarded to all finishers based on their finish time in relation to the quickest finisher (either in their gender or age group) over that distance.

The tables below outline the maximum points that can be awarded to the quickest person over each of the distances available throughout the Scorching events

Note: Maximum Competition points available for the duathlons over summer are less than the equivalent distance during winter, this is due to the emphasis over summer on the triathlons.

There are two ways in which the competition points are calculated, depending on whether the calculation is being used either for results by gender overall, or in 5 year age groups.

Points Calculation examples:

Now here are a couple of examples to explain the calculations:

Example 1

Paul is quickest on the Long Duathlon in September in 2 hours 10 minutes

Joe finished the Long Duathlon behind Paul, in 2 hours 35 minutes

The points awarded are:

  • Paul will get
    • Participant points: 20pts
    • Competition points: 100pts (maximum points possible, since he was quickest)
    • Total points awarded : 120pts
  • Joe will get
    • Participant points: 20pts
    • Competition points: 80.77pts = {1-((2:35-2:10)/2:10)*100pts} – Joe’s Competition points are scaled down from the maximum available by the relative difference between Joe’s finish time and Paul’s finish time
    • Total points awarded : 100.77pts

Example 2

Emma is quickest on the Short Duathlon in September in 42 minutes

Rebecca finished the Short Duathlon behind Emma, in 69 minutes (1hour 9 minutes)

The points awarded are:

  • Emma will get
    • Participant points: 20pts
    • Competition points: 50pts (maximum points possible, since she was quickest)
    • Total points awarded : 70pts
  • Rebecca will get
    • Participant points: 20pts
    • Competition points: 17.86pts = {1-((69-42)/42)*50pts} – Rebecca’s Competition points are scaled down from the maximum available by the relative difference between Rebecca’s finish time and Emma’s finish time
    • Total points awarded : 37.86pts

Okay, you got it all now??? – good – here are the buttons again to get to the real points series table…
